Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s chosen name for their recently arrived daughter has “some interesting historical significance and context” behind it, according to commentators. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor’s second name nods to the Duke of Sussex’s late mother, Princess Diana. However, Royally Obsessed podcast host Rachel Bowie explained that it goes even further back for the Spencer family in British aristocracy.
Ms Bowie told listeners: “Princess Diana’s name has some interesting historical significance and context.
“She actually got her name from Diana Russell, Duchess of Bedford, from the 18th century.
“She also went by Lady Diana Spencer.
“Flashback to when Princess Diana was born, her parents were eagerly awaiting a boy.”
She continued: “Then they were struggling to find a girl name when Diana arrived.
“The ironic part was that 18th century Diana was also set up with the then Prince of Wales, but it didn’t work out.
“There was a weird scandal as they tried to make the match happen, offered a sizable dowery.
“But then the Prime Minister found out and a put the kibosh on the wedding happening.”

The host added: “So that Diana went on to marry the Duke of Bedford, but ended up dying of consumption when she was just 25 years old.
“So it’s a very tragic story as well, but that’s how Princess Diana got her name.
“She died very young too so it’s all kind of tragic.”
