The ex-shadow home secretary said it was “pure folly” for the same people to be arrested and released to bring further disruption. Insulate Britain invaded Junction 3 at the Swanley interchange causing rush-hour misery. Kent Police said 11 were initially arrested before the group returned in the afternoon.
Ms Widdecombe said: “The only way to stop this continuous cycle is for these people to be locked up and stay locked up.
“The fact that some of these people have been arrested five or six times, only to return to the M25 again, is clearly pure folly.”
The group is an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion demanding home insulation by 2030. It will continue its campaign until it gets “a meaningful statement from the Government”.
There have been 438 arrests over two weeks but only 115 are said to be involved. Just two are remanded in custody.
