Several vehicles were involved in the multi-vehicle pileup, which saw one car collide into the central barrier.
The accident took place on the northbound carriageway, between Junction 8 and Junction 9.
According to traffic monitoring service Inrix all lanes are now reopen, but some disruption remains.
They tweeted: “Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M5 Northbound between J8 (M50 interchange) and J7 A44 (Worcester / Evesham).
“All lanes have been re-opened. Traffic was released at 12:50 after being held for five minutes.
“A vehicle collided with the central reservation barrier.”
Earlier Inrix reported significant delays, including on the M5 southbound.
The monitoring service said: “All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Northbound between J8 M50 and J7 A44.
“All traffic held just after 12.45pm. Southbound is slow due to onlookers.”
One Twitter user warned: “If you are coming off at junction 1 M5 – avoid Perry Bar roundabout – traffic horrendous.”
The M5 chaos resulted in the Worcester Warriors Women’s rugby match being delayed by 15 minutes.
The rugby union club tweeted: “2.15pm kick-off!
“Kick-off has been delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic on the M5.”
The Worcester Warriors Women are due to play the Bristol Bears Women in a pre-season friendly.
