According to Highways England, all three lanes going northbound between Junctions 15 and 16 are closed due to an “accident involving a vehicle crossing the central reservation”. Two of three lanes are closed southbound.

BBC Stoke reports that West Midlands Ambulance Service is in attendance assessing those involved in the crash.

Traffic is not expected to return to normal until 4pm this afternoon, Highways England said.

National Highways West Midlands said at 11am that the motorway had been closed due to a “serious multi-vehicle collision which is affecting both sides of the road”.

Junction 15 sits to the south of Newcastle-under-Lyme and is the intersection with the Queensway leading to Stoke-on-Trent.

Junction 16 is the intersection of the M6 and the A500.
