Man arrested after bomb squad called to flat and 'explosive substances' found

A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an ‘explosive substance’ after a bomb disposal squad was called to a street in Brighton.

Police arrested the 30-year-old man, of no fixed address, after several containers suspected to hold petrol were discovered inside a flat yesterday.

Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended Horton Road in East Sussex after a strong smell of fuel was reported coming from the flat just before midday.

An explosive ordnance disposal team have been working to safely remove any potentially hazardous materials, and have warned that residents nearby may be evacuated.

The road has been temporarily closed and a cordon has been set up, but there is not believed to be any threat to the wider community.

The suspect is in custody and officers are continuing to investigate what happened.
