A man has died after leaping from a police patrol car he had just stolen.

The un-named driver was travelling at nearly 50mph in Los Angeles when he jumped from the car yesterday.

He stole the vehicle when officers responded to a crash he was involved in, hopping in their Highway Patrol cruiser when they weren’t looking.

Back-up police followed suit in a 100mph chase across the 138 Freeway.

At one point officials said the man, who reportedly had mental health issues, brandished a shotgun and assault rifle.

Shocking aerial footage shows the moment he jumps to his death before the car veers off the road into a pole.

Officers dragged the man off the road before performing CPR.

They said he was moved because the lines from the damaged power poles were arching, and they were concerned about the electrified wires hitting the road.

He was declared dead after being transported to Antelope Valley Medical Center.
