Man fighting for his life after double stabbing in Manchester

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a double stabbing in Manchester.

Armed police stormed the scene in Church Lane, Moston at around 2.30pm yesterday after a huge fight broke out.

A witness said: ‘I heard a car crash into another car. There were four in one car, two in another.

‘Then I heard fighting. I heard someone say, “He’s been stabbed, he’s been stabbed.”

‘I ran down and we saw him at the end of the road. The man was lying on the floor.

‘He had been stabbed multiple times and was covered in blood. I’ve got goose bumps trying to replay it in my head.

‘There were people helping him. There were a lot of people helping. I saw this pick axe on the floor. It’s horrible.’

One man was said by police to be in a ‘critical’ condition, while a second man is in ‘serious condition’ after attending hospital himself with knife wounds 20 minutes after the fight.

A Volkswagen Polo with its rear window smashed and doors open was left in the middle of the road.

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area following the fight and a large cordon remains in place while forensic investigators check the scene.

Both injured men are aged in their 30s, but haven’t been named. The two incidents are being treated as linked.

There were initial reports of two arrests, but this hasn’t been confirmed by Greater Manchester Police.

Officers say they were called to an ‘altercation’ between a number of people.

Detective inspector Tony Platten said: ‘One man is currently in critical condition in hospital and our detectives are currently working to establish the circumstances of what happened.

‘Residents nearby will see an increased police presence in the area whilst enquiries are carried out.

‘Anyone with concerns can speak to our officers.

‘This kind of violent behaviour will not be tolerated and we’re asking anyone with information to come forward to so we can find those responsible.’

Anyone with any information should call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously.
