Man stabbed in broad daylight in front of shoppers on Oxford Street

Police have partially closed Oxford Street after a man was stabbed in broad daylight.

Images from the scene show a cordon in place as emergency crews treat the victim.

The incident happened in Market Place, at a junction with the famous shopping street, shortly after 5.30pm.

Police say the man has been taken to hospital but have not given an update on his condition.

An eyewitness on social media said they were sitting at a cafe on a side street when they saw a man fall to the floor ‘all of a sudden’.

Others claim to have seen a person armed with a machete chasing a man down the road, though these reports are unconfirmed.

Several emergency services workers can be seen attending to the victim in one video, while others show several police vans lining Oxford Street.

Met Police tweeted: ‘Officers attended and found a male suffering from a stab injury.

‘Police were called at 17:38hrs today to reports of a male stabbed on Market Place close to Oxford Street, W1.

‘He has been taken to hospital and we await an update on his injuries.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said :’We were called at 5:39pm today (8 August) to reports of a stabbing on Market Place just off Oxford Street.

‘We dispatched two ambulance crews, an incident response officer and a medic in a car to the scene. We also dispatched a London’s Air Ambulance trauma team.

‘We treated a person at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre.’
