A junior A&E doctor was left ‘heartbroken’ when a maskless crowd allegedly shouted ‘Covid is a hoax’ outside his hospital on New Year’s Eve.
Dr Matthew Lee said he felt ‘disgusted’ after coming across the gathering as he left St Thomas’ Hospital in London on December 31.
Sharing a video of the crowd, he tweeted: ‘Worked the late A&E SHO shift on NYE and came out to this.
‘Hundreds of maskless, drunk people in huge groups shouting “Covid is a hoax”, literally outside the building where hundreds are sick and dying.
‘Why do people still not realise the seriousness of this pandemic?’
He added: ‘I’m disgusted but mostly heartbroken. I wish people could see the amount of #COVID19 and death in hospitals, and the sacrifices that healthcare workers make.
‘This week alone has been so tough. Their ignorance is hurting others. I really wish people would keep themselves safe.’
It comes as the UK’s daily coronavirus case count surges by 63% in a week, with 53,285 people testing positive yesterday. The country also reported a further 613 fatalities, including the death of a child, 8.
One London-based consultant anaesthetist warned this week the NHS is so dangerously overloaded with Covid cases, doctors fear they will soon have to decide who to treat and who to leave to die.
Dr Claudia Paoloni said the situation is so bad, medics are days away from making ‘horrendous choices’.
Dr Lee’s video sparked outrage online, with hundreds of people condemning the gathering outside St Thomas’ – the hospital where Boris Johnson was treated when he caught Covid-19 in April.
Piers Morgan shared Dr Lee’s clip, writing: ‘This is so disgusting. These morons shame Britain.’
He later added: ‘Still seething about this. If it’s a hoax, let’s take all these imbeciles inside the Covid ward without PPE.
‘See how brave they feel when confronted with the reality of people choking to death.’
Meanwhile, paediatric doctor Sarah Hallett said: ’And yet ironically, despite how angry and despairing this makes us as NHS staff, if any single one of them needed our help (perhaps intubation and ventilation for example), we would do it in a heartbeat.’
Someone else added: ‘I’d love to drag them around the hospital, going from ward to ward showing them the devastation Covid is causing.
‘Maybe end the tour with a quick visit to the Morgue. Absolute fools.’
