McDonald's opening 1,000 restaurants for drive-thru and delivery this week

Have you been pining for a Big Mac since the UK’s coronavirus lockdown came into force?

McDonald’s may have shared tips on how to re-create the Sausage and Egg McMuffin at home, but to many fans of the chain, homemade versions just won’t be the same.

But fear not if you’re hankering for your fast food fix, as McDonald’s is opening all 924 of its drive-thrus in the UK between today and Thursday as it moves to get its 1,450 restaurants back in business.

For those without cars, or if you just want the convenience of burgers and chicken nuggers at your door, Maccies is adding another 75 outlets to its McDelivery service on Uber Eats and Just Eat. This is in addition to branches opened as past of its delivery-only trial in early May.

Restaurants will be working with smaller teams, with limited menus and opening hours of 11am to 10pm until further notice – so you’ll have to wait a little bit longer for a McDonald’s breakfast. Drive-thru orders will be capped at £25 and payments will be contactless.

As you’d expect, dining areas are still closed to the public. Announcing the move, a spokesman for the chain said: ‘This is only possible following the hard work of the teams in our 44 pilot restaurants.

‘Over the last fortnight, our employees, franchisees and suppliers have worked tirelessly to implement new procedures to enable safe working so that we can now help all parts of the UK and Ireland to enjoy the return of the Big Mac.

‘Face coverings, gloves, Perspex screens and new safety and hygiene processes mean it will look different, it will take a little longer and as we have seen in the pilot restaurants, we expect demand will be high. Please bear with us, we will continue to put our people first – their safety is our priority.’

McDonald’s employees will be asked to confirm they are healthy enough to work and will have their temperatures taken with contactless thermometers at the start of every shift.

Restaurant openings will be published on McDonald’s website every day.
