The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to pursue their film deal with Netflix in spite of the “unsympathetic and unrealistic” portrayals of a “cold” Queen and “self-absorbed” Prince Charles in the television series, The Crown. Meghan and Harry have signed a multi-million-pound contract with Netflix to make documentaries and other films. The portrayal of the Royal Family in The Crown does not seem to have made them hesitate from carrying on with the deal.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told The Sun: “I believe you certainly won’t find their deal is in any way affected by this.
“I strongly suspect they will not have a problem with the royal family being portrayed as dysfunctional and flawed.”
Mr Fitzwilliams said that only Diana receives a “sympathetic” portrayal in The Crown.
He said: “One extraordinary aspect of watching the series is the way members of the royal family are supposedly so spiteful and ill-mannered.
“The way they talk, it’s simply dramatic licence pushed to the limit.”
The first episode of the television series aired yesterday and showed Princess Diana’s bulimia and Prince Charles’ affair.
Mr Fitzwilliams said the series was full of “character assassination on a seismic scale”.
He added: “We must remember that The Crown has been going for a long time.
“Meghan and Harry will claim the show uses dramatic licence, as indeed it does.
“And of course, the couple were very unhappy as senior members of the family.
“As for the portrayal of the family, I suspect they might even be sympathetic with some of it.
“They stood back and ended up standing down after just two years.”

Speaking to The Times Royal biographer Penny Junor attacked the portrayal of the Royal Family in the Netflix Original series.
She said that Prince Charles would be “incredibly upset” by the series.
Speaking to The Times Mrs Junor said: “It’s the most cruel and unfair and horrible portrayal of almost all of them”.
She added that the series “invented stuff to make expensive and very rich drama”.
