The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are “overjoyed” by Meghan’s pregnancy, a spokesperson for the couple said. In a short statement released on Sunday evening, Meghan and Harry shared the news by first giving a special nod to their 21-month-old son becoming an older brother to his little brother or sister.
It read: “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
The Valentine’s Day announcement was confirmed along with an adorable picture of the royal couple.
A black-and-white snap shows the pair sat under a tree, with Harry resting his hand on Meghan’s head as she lay in his lap cradling her baby bump.
The special moment was captured by photographer and friend of Meghan and Harry; Misan Harriman.
In a post on Twitter, she wrote: “Meg, I was there at your wedding to witness this love story begin, and my friend, I am honoured to capture it grow.
“Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on this joyous news!”
The baby news comes just months after Meghan revealed she suffered the heartbreak of a miscarriage during the summer of 2020.
The Duchess of Sussex wrote about her grief during a deeply personal article in the New York Times.
She describes falling to the floor holding Archie in their Californian home, knowing she was about to lose her unborn child.
Meghan wrote: “I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right.
“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.
“Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal.”
Archie is currently seventh-in-line to the throne and his younger sibling will become eighth.
They will not become a HRH nor receive prince of princess title.
However, the new royal arrival could become a Lord or a Lady – but Harry and Meghan are unlikely to accept.
Baby Sussex will be the 5th grandchild of Prince Charles – after Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Archie.
Prince Harry’s cousin Zara Phillips is also expecting a baby this year – meaning the Duke’s second child arrival will either be the Queen’s 10th or 11th great-grandchild depending on who arrive first.
