Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s popularity on social media platforms has helped Prince William and Kate improve their own online presence as they shift towards YouTube and Instagram. Royal expert Katie Nicholl said the couple had realised that they too needed to “have a commanding presence” amongst younger audiences.
The royal editor of Vanity Fair told 9Honey that Meghan and Harry’s high profile on social media and their new deals with streaming services have “been a bit of a nudge” for William and Kate.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced on May 5 that they would be launching their own YouTube channel.
Katie Nicholl said: “I think they, both of them, have let their guard down a bit and become more relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera because it’s on their terms.”
“It’s them controlling their public image and their narrative and therefore you are seeing a more relaxed William and Kate.”
By focusing their attention on YouTube and social media, the Duke and Duchess are hoping to appeal to the younger generation.
Ms Nicholl added: “If you’re going to reach out to this audience via YouTube or Instagram, you have to be authentic, you have to be real and relatable too.”
“Stiff, formal, un-relatable, uncomfortable is not going to yield them followers.
“Open, relaxed, relatable will and they are clearly comfortable enough to let their guards down and show a bit more of their real personalities, which has been lovely to see.”
The couple released a 25-second trailer to promote their new YouTube channel.
The trailer opened with the Duke and Duchess sitting on their sofa at their family home, Amner Hall in Norfolk. Clips from the trailer showed footage of Kate playing archery and William serving food in a street kitchen amongst other public appearances.
Prince William joked to his wife that she needed to be careful with her words as “these guys are filming everything”.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the royal couple have cemented themselves as key players of the monarchy. With the Queen and the Prince of Wales vulnerable to Covid-19, the Duke and Duchess have undertaken more engagements.
Their Instagram is frequently updated with footage of their activities and has offered audiences glimpses of their home life.

During the weekly ‘Clap for Heroes’, Prince William and Kate shared videos of them outside their home clapping with their three young children.
Also, for their 10-year wedding anniversary in April, the couple shared a short film of the family playing on a beach and toasting marshmallows. These appearances on social media are believed to have made the future king and queen more relatable to audiences.
Whilst Meghan Markle and Prince Harry currently do not use Instagram, they have made several media appearances since leaving the Royal Family.
They have also committed to produce content with Netflix and Spotify in a deal that is estimated to be worth £100 million.
