Meghan Markle beats sister-in-law Kate with new title as Duchess of Cambridge snubbed

The Duchess of Sussex has been credited by the fashion bible for “epitomising modern-thinking royalty”. Vogue also described 2019 as a “landmark year” for Meghan. This is following the birth of Archie and her work as guest editor for the British magazine, as well as releasing a capsule wardrobe for charity Smart Works.

Vogue said: “Her streamlined, considered wardrobe is emblematic of a woman who epitomises modern-thinking royalty.”

Other celebrities who made the top 10 include Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Naomi Campbell.

But Kate was not on the list, despite delighting fans with her impeccable fashion choices throughout the year.

Most recently, she was snapped attending the Queen’s annual private lunch in a Christmasy plaid outfit.

The royal was first pictured wearing plaid in 2008 and her attachment for the pattern has “grown over a decade”, according to Marie Claire.

Last month, Kate also stunned in a long patterned Alexander McQueen dress for the Royal Variety Performance.

And she has also worn trousers for many royal engagements this year.

This included her burgundy Joseph trousers for Shout’s Crisis Volunteer celebration event in London on November 12.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Sussex has used her fashion influence to raise awareness of inspirational women around the world.

She brought together 15 women for the September issue of British Vogue, including actress Jane Fonda and climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Meghan said in the issue: “These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today.

“Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light.

“I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the forces for change they’ll find within these pages.”

The magazine’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said Meghan is the first person to guest edit the September issue.

He said: “To have the country’s most influential beacon of change guest edit British Vogue at this time has been an honour, a pleasure and a wonderful surprise.

“As you will see from her selections throughout this magazine, she is also willing to wade into more complex and nuanced areas, whether they concern female empowerment, mental health, race or privilege.

“From the very beginning, we talked about the cover – whether she would be on it or not.

“In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a ‘boastful’ thing to do for this particular project.

“She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires.”
