Meghan Markle will celebrate her first birthday outside of senior royalty tomorrow, as she turns 39. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the Royal Family last year, following growing discontent with their position. They have since settled in North America, first in Canada and later in Los Angeles, the Duchess’ place of birth.

The Duchess of Sussex is thought to have plans to spend the day with immediate family only.

According to HELLO! Magazine the royal couple will stay at home with one-year-old baby Archie in their £15 million mansion owned by American actor and comedian Tyler Perry.

While not yet confirmed, Doria Ragland, the Duchess’ mother will also likely join, as she resides nearby.

The social worker also allegedly has a room in the couple’s house, where she may stay if she chooses.

The occasion will mirror the approach the Duchess has taken in the previous two years.

In 2019, she allegedly opted for a “family day”, rather than a party with friends.

She stayed at Frogmore Cottage, the Sussex family’s Windsor residence, for the day.

There was little publicity of the day beyond an Instagram post from Prince Harry.

He wrote: “Happy Birthday to my amazing wife. Thank you for joining me on this adventure!”

A source told The Sun at the time they decided on a dressed-down occasion due to backlash from a baby shower earlier in the year.

They said: “Frogmore Cottage will host a celebration for Meghan’s birthday.

“The Clooney clan will be in Villa Oleandra on Lake Como and the Sussexes will not want to be seen enjoying more of their lavish hospitality after the PR disaster backlash post the US baby shower.”

The year before, she spent her birthday at the wedding of Prince Harry’s close friend, Charlie Van Straubenzee.

Mr Van Straubenzee was an usher at the couple’s wedding, and there was little information as to how the couple celebrated otherwise.

Back in 2016, the Duchess revealed she uses her birthday as an opportunity for introspection.

Writing on her now-defunct blog named The Tig, she said her mother inspired the tradition she practices every year.

At the time, she also publicly revealed what she wanted for the year ahead.

She wrote: “My mom has always said that birthdays are your own personal New Year.

“Your own chance to make resolutions just for yourself and what you prognosticate for your year ahead.”

She added she wanted “More surprises, more adventure, more opportunities to grow, more days filled with giggles and cheeky jokes, more delicious meals, and more inspiration. Always more inspiration.”
