Earlier this week, US breakfast show host Gayle King stunned royal observers by revealing that she had called the Sussexes and was told Harry had spoken to his father, the Prince of Wales, and brother the Duke of Cambridge. Meghan Markle also told Ms King that she is still “upset” that the Palace continues to brief about her, following the Oprah Winfrey interview. However, ITV News Royal Editor Chris Ship fact-checked this report and said it was simply not true.

In her bombshell remarks, Ms King said on CBS This Morning: “I’m not trying to break news, but I did actually call them to see how they were feeling and it’s true Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too.

“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive but they are glad that they have at least started a conversation.

“And I think what is still upsetting to them is that the palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately.

“Yet they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still – no one in the royal family has talked to Meghan yet.”

During ITV’s Royal Rota, Mr Ship disputed these claims, saying no-one was briefing against the Duchess.

Co-host Lizzie Robinson noted: “I thought it was interesting that what Gayle King said was upsetting them, another update on what they are still not happy about, is that the Palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately but Harry and Meghan believe these false stories are coming out from the Palace that are very disparaging against Meghan.”

Mr Ship responded: “What are those? I haven’t much briefing. Well, I haven’t heard any briefing or even read any briefing against Meghan from the Palace.

“They have kind of shut down since the Oprah interview, except the very brief four sentences from the Queen.”

Ms Robinson said: “Gayle also said no-one has spoken to Meghan at this particular time – so it seems they are unhappy about that too.”

Meghan Markle's 'interest in politics' discussed by expert

Mr Ship defended the Royal Family, remarking: “You would think that the first point of contact would be speaking with the son, before they speak to the daughter-in-law.

“None of this came out of Gayle King’s mouth without approval from Harry and Meghan.”

He also noted that Meghan Markle was now doing what she had asked her father Thomas Markle not to do.

He said: “Playing Devil’s Advocate, isn’t that exactly what Meghan was asking Thomas Markle not to do when he was speaking to the media and Meghan wanted to keep it private.”

Ms Robinson added: “I kept thinking about the irony of that. That she kept wanting to deal with things privately with Thomas and he kept talking to the media.

“It does seem that these things are better dealt with privately behind the scenes.”

After the Oprah interview, the Queen said in a statement that the issues raised, including race, would be “addressed by the family privately”.
