Using #HappyBirthdayMeghan, fans have shared messages calling the Duchess “inspiring, hardworking and incredible” and “kind and selfless”. One fan tweeted: “Happy birthday to one of my inspirations — I hope she gets to have the best stress-free day with her loved ones and family.”

Another user said “Happy Birthday to our princess!” and others shared well wishes for the Duchess, saying: “Hope life is treating her well now she’s a mom to two growing children.”

The support for Meghan comes following Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step away from the Royal Family in 2020, and the infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey which shook the royal household to its core in March.

Many of the tweets shared refer to Megxit, with one fan stating: “Oh M, you had a few really tough years in UK where you tried to ‘fit in’… but it’s over now.”

They added: “You are in a place where you truly are you and you are enough.”

Others shared messages that come from a post the Duchess shared for her 33rd birthday on her now-defunct lifestyle blog, ‘The Tig’.

Back in 2014, The Duchess was reflecting on the “constant battle with myself” she faced in her twenties.

The post’s underlying message was about self-acceptance and happiness.

Fans have been sharing the quote: “So for my birthday, here’s what I would like as a gift.

“I want you to be kind to yourself. I want you to challenge yourself.

“I want you to find your happiness. I did.

“And it’s never felt so good. I am enough.”

One fan responded to this birthday message stating: “Every time I read this I think how they almost destroyed that confidence, almost destroyed her belief in herself! My birthday wish for #Meghans40celebration is that she knows bone-deep she is everything and more than enough.”

Alongside messages from fans, the Royal Family have also publicly marked this milestone by sharing birthday messages on Twitter.

Earlier today, the Royal Family Twitter account captioned a three-picture montage including a snap showing Meghan, Harry and Archie during a visit to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, with an emoji of a balloon and caption: “Wishing The Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday today!”

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William also shared a picture of Meghan taken in October 2018 from Bondi Beach in Australia, when she was pregnant with Archie. The accompanying message read “Wishing a happy 40th birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!” alongside a birthday cake emoji.

The Duchess, who lives in the US with husband Harry, gave birth to their daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor last month. The couple’s eldest child Archie turned two in May.

The messages accompany speculation on what the mother-of-two will do to celebrate her milestone birthday.

Insiders have claimed Harry has something special up his sleeve.

Reports speculate whether there will be an intimate gathering at her and Harry’s Montecito home.

The pair are both currently still on leave from work to look after their newborn.
