Unlike her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, who spent most of her adulthood being groomed for a royal role, Meghan Markle had a very different journey. Before she joined the Royal Family in May, 2018, Prince Harry’s wife was a successful actress and her big break was her role on the TV legal drama Suits. She once described herself on her lifestyle blog ‘The Tig’ as the California girl who “lives by the ethos that most things can be cured with either yoga, the beach, or a few avocados”.
It is not surprising then, that Meghan “did not know much” about Harry before meeting him, as she claimed during their post-engagement interview in 2017 and most recently during her chat with Oprah.
In a newly-resurfaced interview, Meghan also appeared to not be very well prepared on “Britishness” either.
In a 2016 Dave interview, Meghan – at the time most famous for her acting work – was asked several questions to test her British knowledge.
When asked what the national animals of England, Wales and Scotland were, the future Duchess of Sussex looked clueless.
When asked about England, she said: “Am I supposed to know that?
Looking at someone behind the camera, she added: “You don’t know that. She doesn’t know it either.”
When the animal was finally revealed to her, Meghan rebutted with much surprise: “It’s a lion. Oh, appropriate!”
She was even more surprised when they told her about Scotland’s national animal.
She said: “No. Really?!
“It’s a unicorn?!
“We are all moving to Scotland!”
Since Meghan met Harry, her knowledge on all things British has without a doubt improved.

According to the Duchess, she did not even know she had to curtsy to the Queen in private when she first met her and hadn’t even done a deep Google search of her now-husband.
She told Oprah in March she was baffled that she’d have to curtsy for private family occasions.
She said with a laugh, after recounting a story about practising for a few moments outside before nervously meeting the Queen: “Apparently I did a very deep curtsy, I don’t remember it.”
The Duchess said she wrongly thought she would be ready to meet such a high-profile figure, having grown up in Los Angeles around so many celebrities.
She explained: “This is not the same.
“It is very easy, especially as an American, to say, ‘These are famous people.’ No, this is a completely different ball game.”

Still, she said she was glad she didn’t know too much.
She added: “Thank God I didn’t know a lot about the family.
“Thank God I hadn’t researched.
“I would’ve been so in my head about it.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a huge decision in January, 2020, as they announced their intentions to step back as senior members of the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle eventually relocated from their temporary Vancouver Island residence to Los Angeles as they began their new post-royal lives.
The decision to step down came after months of speculation the Duchess could not settle into royal life.
