Meghan Markle’s reputation would not be impacted even if it emerged her podcast series, titled Archetypes, didn’t perform well, according to experts. Discussing the issue, Eric Silver, head of creative at Multitude Productions, told Express.co.uk: “No, her reputation will not be hit.
“First of all, the show is performing well for what it is – a Spotify exclusive with a massive celebrity.
“The only person whose reputation is on the line is Spotify. From the outside, it looks like Spotify approached her and threw a ton of money at her for exclusivity.
“It’s on Spotify if they overvalued the contract and assumed it would be a Massive Hit (whatever that means), not Meghan.”
Similarly, Arielle Nissenblatt, Founder of EarBuds Podcast Collective, does not believe podcasts, unlike other enterprises such as films or TV shows, can have a major impact on the brand and reputation of the celebrities hosting them.
She told Express.co.uk: “I have not necessarily seen that to be the case. There’s a lot of celebrities lately that get a podcast which sorts of fazes out and it’s not renewed for a second season and you just don’t hear anything about it anymore.
“And I think that for the celebrity it’s a good thing that there isn’t a reputational impact.
“What it says about podcasting, what people are interested in and how much a podcast impacts a celebrity is a little bit sad to me, because there should be a reputational impact if the programme didn’t perform very well, but I haven’t seen anything too negative there happening.”
Meghan and Prince Harry signed a multi-year deal with the audio streaming platform in late 2020 and have since released, alongside 12 episodes of Archetypes, a holiday special two years ago which featured an array of celebrities sharing personal anecdotes and inspiring stories.
Both Spotify and the Sussexes have remained tight-lipped on the size of this deal but reports claimed it could be worth between $25 and $30million.
The Duchess of Sussex concluded the first season of her podcast series Archetypes on Tuesday.
The first episodes of the show appeared to be an immediate hit, shooting up to the top of Spotify charts in the UK and the US among other nations.
As the show progressed, the series slipped behind in the charts, but continued to catch the attention of both the media and the public with its guests and personal memories shared by Meghan.
Asked whether it was normal for podcasts to lose momentum throughout their season, Mr Silver said, referring to the Spotify charts: “Yes! This is a function of the charts that you’re looking at, which is why many take them with a grain of salt.
“Apple and Spotify haven’t disclosed how the charts work, but it seems that they’re very affected by a sudden burst of attention.
“Since new shows are going from 0 to something, that would be a really good way to climb charts.
“Things start to fade once the show is going, which is frustrating because podcasts are all about episodes coming out continuously.
“The numbers will continue to slide with the seasonal nature of Meghan’s show; podcasts’ relationships with their audience thrive with continuous weekly or bi-weekly episodes.”
Following the release of the 12th episode of Archetypes, Meghan did not share whether she is planning to bring back her programme next year for another season.
Asked whether Meghan could return with Archetypes next year, featuring new guests and new topics to discuss, Ms Nissenblatt said: “Yes, I expect a second season at least. It’s up to Spotify of course, Spotify needs to decide if it performed the way they expected it to perform.
“So that’s of course going to happen once season one finishes, and probably throughout season one there has been an analysis of statistics and things like that on, for example, what causes the spike in downloads and what doesn’t in terms of when things are posted or whether the hiatus they took after the Queen’s death affected anything.
“But, definitely, I think the demand is there.”
