Victoria Arbiter told Good Morning Britain that Americans are “Team Sussex” following Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. However, the royal commentator added that the support the couple has will be diminished if “third-parties” such as Gayle King continue to speak on Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s behalf.

Ms Arbiter said: “I think the royal soap-opera continues on this side of the pond.

“Following the Oprah interview, there was a huge swell in sympathy for Harry and Meghan.

“Americans were very proud to see one of their own marry into the Royal Family, there has long been a fascination here with the British monarchy.

“But suddenly hearing about their struggles first hand, I think there was a real backlash towards the monarchy and there is a sense of negativity towards them.

“It is definitely Team Sussex on this side of the pond.”

She continued: “But I think if this type of private information shared with everybody continues there is a potential for there to be a backlash and their brand be damaged.

“So I think they are going to have to be careful on who is speaking on their behalf.

“Certainly, Gayle King is a good friend of Harry and Meghan but when a third party gets involved you are suddenly left thinking ‘did Harry and Meghan say that exactly or is this Miss King’s interpretation’.

Meghan and Harry: Ranvir Singh discusses Gayle King leak

“The waters start to get a little muddied and that is what then complicates things further.”

Earlier this week US commentator Gayle King stated that Prince Harry had spoken to Prince William as well as Prince Charles.

Ms King told CBS: “Well I’m not trying to break news, but I did actually call them to see how they were feeling, and it’s true, Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too.

“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive but they are glad that they have at least started a conversation.”

She added: “And I think what is still upsetting to them is the palace keep saying they want to work it out privately, but yet, they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan, still.

“No one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet, at this particular time.

“And I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the Press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant.

“And until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward.”
