Tonight, a documentary on Channel 5 is asking where it all went wrong for Meghan Markle in the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals to start their own “independent” life last year, but the first problems started just months into their relationship. Meghan struggled with the strict protocol associated with being involved with the Royal Family – even before she married Prince Harry.
The Firm has a way of handling the press that Meghan was not used to, being from the world of Hollywood.
Soon after the news broke that she and Harry were an item, she became the focus of much media interest.
Around that time, Meghan was photographed wearing a 14-carat gold Maya Brenner necklace with initial ‘H’ and ‘M’ on it.
According to the book ‘Finding Freedom’, Palace aides were annoyed about the attention the extra photographs garnered.
They called her up to give her some advice about how to handle the press, but Meghan found their rules rather constricting and impossible to please.
Co-authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed a senior Kensington Palace courtier spoke to Meghan and told her that wearing the necklace “only serves to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images ‒ and new headlines”.
They said she should not smile at the paparazzi because they claimed it would egg them on.
According to the biography, she said little during the call, choosing instead to simply listen to their counsel.
However, after hanging up she felt “frustrated and emotional”.
For an independent career woman in her thirties, having her boyfriend’s staff “tell her what kind of jewellery to wear or not to smile at a photograph” was “too much”.
She called up a friend and explained how she felt she could not win with the Palace.
Apparently, just days before she had been blamed for looking “miserable” in photographs, but now she was being told not to smile.

Despite her difficulty adjusting to having the Palace involved with her life, Meghan and Harry’s relationship went from strength to strength and they eventually announced their engagement a year later.
They married in a beautiful fairytale wedding in May 2018 and had their first child the following year.
However, things were not as perfect as they seemed, as Meghan was struggling with her mental health behind the scenes.
She told Oprah Winfrey this year that she had even experienced suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy.

Both she and Harry felt the Palace was not protecting them from media attacks and criticism.
Meghan described feeling like she was not supported when she went to the institution for help with her mental health issues.
In January last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping down as senior royals.
After a brief stint in Canada, they moved to the US and bought a home in Montecito.
They have launched their new charitable venture, Archewell Foundation, and signed huge deals with Netflix and Spotify resulting in Archewell Productions and Archewell Audio respectively.
What’s more, Meghan is pregnant with their second child – a girl – and is due in the summer, meaning she could give birth any day now.
Now, Meghan and Harry are in charge of their own lives and can decide how to deal with the press.
