The Duchess of Cambridge hoped the “focus” would shift onto Meghan Markle’s royal entrance, commentators have claimed. Kate was said to be “glad” to have another “outsider” in the monarchy. Channel 5 documentary, ‘Kate: Our Queen in Waiting’, explored the Duchess of Sussex’s relationship with her sister-in-law.

Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews told viewers: “I think when Meghan first arrived on the scene, Kate was probably quite glad.

“There was going to be someone else to draw the attention.

“Someone else that the press would focus on.

“There was this new person in town.”

Narrator David Riley added: “As Meghan prepared to marry Harry, there was excitement over the arrival of a new royal amongst the public and within the institution.

“Significantly for Kate, that meant another outsider marrying into the family.”

Filmmaker and broadcaster Bidisha said: “By all accounts in those early months, she did reach out to Meghan.”

Ms Andrews agreed: “She said she could put her in touch with any fashion designers she knew.”

The Duchesses were seen out on joint engagements and family events.

However, behind-the-scenes, they were not as close as what appeared.

Many commentators put the distance down to differences in their personalities.

Additionally, the stress of their roles as royals, mothers, and wives may have added to the experience.

Despite reported tensions, Meghan described her sister-in-law as “a good person” during her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
