Britney Johnson from Sneyd Green in Stoke-on-Trent got more than she bargained for with her latest McDonald’s order. In addition to the usual ingredients in her meal, Britney discovered an additional ingredient you’d usually find in your garden, that she admits she’d almost eaten thinking it was a crumb.

Ms Johnson, along with her partner and two young daughters visited a drive-thru of the fast-food restaurant on December 20.

Her order, totalling £18, comprised of two chicken burger meals, a chicken nugget Happy Meal and a small pack of cheese dippers.

The family parked up to enjoy their food before Britney discovered an unexpected ingredient in her meal.

Britney says she saw something hard in her burger, before realising it was a snail’s shell.

The 22-year-old told Stoke-on-Trent Live: “I was breaking my burger up into little pieces – and because of that I thought it was a crumb in my burger box.

“I picked it up and realised it was a bit hard on my fingers.

“I looked at it and saw a shell.

“I was like ‘oh my God, it’s a snail’. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was like ‘am I seeing things’?”

She added that she was “shocked”, and had almost consumed the shell after thinking it was a crumb.

She added: “I don’t know if it had come out of the lettuce. We were parked in the car park so I told my partner to go back in and tell them what had happened.”

The family-of-four say the staff at the McDonald’s branch were apologetic and offered a full refund for her order, as well as a replacement.

Britney also explained how helpful McDonald’s staff were when she brought the issue to their attention, and that she took them up on their offer of a refund but not a replacement

She said: “We got our money back for the entire order.

“The man was lovely and couldn’t be anymore sorry.

“I was happy I got the refund. They couldn’t have been any more helpful.”

Britney added: “I was mortified. I eat McDonald’s quite a bit – and this has put me off.”

She also expressed how she was glad it was in her meal, and not those given to her children.

She said: “Luckily it was in my meal and I noticed it.

“But imagine it was my little girl. Imagine if I had given it to my 11-month-old baby.

“You never believe it until you see it for yourself. You hear all these stories and think it’s not happening.”

McDonald’s says “food safety and quality is of the utmost importance” to the company.

A McDonald’s spokesman added: “We place great emphasis on quality control and follow rigorous standards in order to avoid any imperfections.

“As soon as this was brought to our attention, our restaurant team apologised and the customer was offered a full refund and the option for a replacement meal.”
