Mother 'found' after baby's body discovered in garden

Police believe they have located the mother of a newborn baby who was found dead in a garden.

The little boy was discovered by a member of the public in the garden in Weston-Super-Mare at around 8.5am yesterday.

Avon and Somerset Police had issued a desperate appeal to find his mum, saying they were concerned for her wellbeing.

In an update, they said: ‘During the course of our enquiries, information has been received which has helped us locate who we believe is the baby’s mother.

‘This woman has been taken immediately to hospital where she’ll receive the expert medical attention and professional support she needs.

‘I’d like to thank the entire Weston-super-Mare community for their help and support during what’s been a difficult day for all involved.

‘The baby’s death is still being treated as unexplained.’

The garden where the baby was found is on Victoria Quadrant.

DCI Mike Buck had said earlier: ‘This is a very sad and distressing incident.

‘We’re extremely concerned for the welfare of the mother of this child and need to trace her as soon as possible.

‘We’re treating the baby’s death as unexplained at this time.

‘I’m specifically appealing to people in Weston-super-Mare.

‘Have you suspected somebody you know is heavily pregnant, but may not have been willing to disclose this?

‘That person might have a connection with Victoria Quadrant?

‘Their behaviour might have changed in the last 24 hours?

‘You can contact us in complete confidence.

‘Our priority right now is to find the mother of this child and support her, so please do the right thing.’
