Shocking footage has emerged of the moment flames erupted on a double-decker bus travelling along a busy section of motorway. The fire broke out on the top deck as the bus drove past traffic on the M56 near Wythenshawe in Manchester on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were alerted at around 2pm after motorists noticed smoke bellowing from the Stagecoach bus on the inside lane of the carriageway.
Pictures from the scene show firefighters battling to contain the bus blaze.
Huge plumes of smoke could be seen billowing out of the top of the stricken vehicle.
The footage was taken by passengers in passing cars who were shocked by the inferno which had engulfed the bus.
Stagecoach has confirmed that the vehicle had not been in service at the time of the blaze and there had been no passengers on board when the fire broke out.
The company said the driver managed to escape without any injuries.
Stagecoach added that an investigation into the incident is underway to find the cause of the fire.
A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: “We can confirm one of our vehicles has been involved in an incident on the M56 this afternoon. The bus was not in service.
