Mourning woman 'raped' in graveyard by grey-haired man

Police are investigating reports a woman was raped after being approached by a grey-haired man as she sat on a graveyard bench.

The alleged attack was said to have taken place as dusk fell between 5.30pm and 6pm close to St Andrew’s Church in Hove on Thursday.

Detectives hoping to speak to the 55-year-old complainant said she was still too ‘distraught’ to be interviewed in any detail about what happened.

She is being supported by specially trained officers.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s and 5ft 6ins tall with short grey hair and jeans.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘He attacked his victim after sitting down beside her on a bench.’

Detective Inspector Vickie Maroki, of Brighton’s Safeguarding Investigations Unit, added: ‘We believe this to be an isolated incident but clearly we want to find out more as soon as we can.

‘Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in what is a busy area is asked to contact Sussex Police without delay, quoting Operation Epping.’

They can do so online or by phoning 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
