New record high as 6,000,000 in England waiting for hospital treatment

The number of people waiting for hospital treatment rose to a new record of 6 million in November, new figures have shown.

A total of 18,585 people were also waiting more than two years to start their treatment, demonstrating the grim state the NHS is in after nearly two years of pandemic.

The waiting list figure, released weekly over winter, is the highest number since records began in August 2007.

The number of people having to wait more than 52 weeks to start treatment stood at 306,996 in November 2021, down from 312,665 in the previous month but up 60% from the number waiting a year earlier, in November 2020, which was 192,169.
