The Government’s decision to grant Chinese tech firm Huawei access to UK 5G mobile networks has sparked a storm of controversy since it was announced. There are fears that this may pose a security risk by facilitating the Chinese Government using the equipment to spy. Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage revealed the decision is now posing a “risk” to the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal with the US as Donald Trump is “really really worried”.
He told listeners: “Last Thursday, I was privileged enough to find myself in the Oval Office and I did talk to President Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence.
“I’ve given you the official answer from the President which was that the UK must decide what is right for the UK.
“I’ve given no hints in any way at all for any other conversation and nor will I, but I did come back from that trip to the States telling you that I’d met congressmen, I’d met senators really really worried about this decision.
“And the interesting thing is that this is not just the Republicans. Oddly, the Republicans and Democrats are united over the threat that Huawei poses given that it’s not a private company, it is effectively run by the Chinese Communist Party and they have a record of wanting to try and steal information and spy on everybody.”
Mr Farage continued: “I came back from that trip and said that I genuinely think there are real risks here, risks to intelligence sharing, risks to the future of NATO, risks to us getting a trade deal through Congress.
“That trade deal, of course, being a very important negotiation in terms of our leverage on Brussels, where they’ve been kicking up rough over the course of the last 24 hours.
“French ministers are suggesting there’s going to be a sort of absolute full on clash within the next few weeks, and maybe there will be so this really matters.
“This morning, this tweet came out from the American ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, and it’s very telling.”
The Brexit Party leader added: “He says: ‘Donald Trump just called me from Air Force One, and instructed me to make clear that any nation who chooses to use an untrustworthy 5G vendor will jeopardise our ability to share intelligence and information at the highest level’.
“Now Germany is currently talking about whether they want Huawei to be involved in their networks or not.
“Let’s just remind ourselves the Americans have said no, the Australians despite their deep economic links with China have said no, and feel so vehemently about it that an Australian parliamentary delegation due to this country later on this month has been cancelled as a direct result of the British Government’s decision.”

Mr Farage also said: “Japan, of course, is saying no. The French look like they too are going to say no, and we have said yes.
“Now I have pointed out to you over the last few weeks the sheer extent to which the British establishment appears to be in thrall to China.
“Former civil servants, former business big bosses, former political figures all getting jobs on boards or working as advisers for China.
“Our biggest PR company’s now employed by Huawei and other Chinese companies, and even many of Boris Johnson’s family are quite deeply linked with China and Chinese businesses.
“There’s nothing wrong with that, but is does say that all the people around Boris, everything in his decision process, seems to see China as an economic opportunity and not as a threat.”
