The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have turned down the Scottish title for their son over fears he would be bullied. But royal author Robert Jobson pointed out that Harry is already the Earl of Dumbarton.

Mr Jobson said on Twitter: “Harry is already the Earl of Dumbarton. It is his title when he is in Scotland.”

Harry was given the title – which has strong military connections – by the Queen to mark his royal wedding in May 2018.

He was also handed the titles Duke of Sussex and Baron Kilkeel.

However, it has been claimed that Harry and Meghan declined to use the Earl of Dumbarton title for Archie, who was born in 2019, due to the word “dumb”.

A source told the Telegraph: “They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it began with the word ‘dumb’. They were worried about how that might look.”

Another insider added: “It wasn’t just Meghan who pointed out the potential pitfalls, it also bothered Harry.”

Royal expert Phil Dampier reacted with incredulity to reports the Sussexes rejected the title for their son.

He said on Twitter: “You couldn’t make it up!”

It comes after reports that Charles told the Sussexes he will never let Archie become a Prince due to his plans for a slimmed-down monarchy when he is King.

The heir to the throne is said to be planning on changing legal documents to block his grandson from having the title.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: “Harry and Meghan were told Archie would never be a Prince, even when Charles became King.”

However, the Telegraph cited sources as confirming the Sussexes “never raised an issue” about Archie not being a Prince until their controversial Oprah Winfrey interview in March.

Meghan complained to the US talk show host about Archie not getting a royal title.

She said: “They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security.”

Harry and Meghan quit royal duties last year for a new life in America.

The couple has bought an £11 million mansion in California where they are living with their two-year-old son and newborn daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana.

The pair plunged the royals into a fresh crisis just a year after Megxit with their tell-all TV interview.

They made a set of astonishing claims about the Royal Family, including racism accusations.
