The US TV host has said she was “surprised” by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s claims in the interview over a month ago. The two-hour interview was aired while Philip was in hospital after surgery on his heart. Former royal editor at The Sun, Charlie Rae, has accused Ms Winfrey of trying to get more publicity from the interview.

Speaking to talkRADIO, Mr Rae said: “She’s just trying to give herself more publicity.

“When she talks about their truth, we all now know what the truth was which isn’t exactly the truth.

“It’s their version. It’s not the truth.

“There were lots of things that were said by Meghan and agreed with by Harry that were no true.

“You know what these people are like, they want to blow their own trumpets and show the world they got the interview.

“You could have put a monkey in front of Oprah that day and asked a question and she would have scored a hit with that as well.”

He added there was “no evidence” behind the claims.

In the interview, Meghan suggested it was her son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor’s “birthright” to be a prince and the decision not to give him a title went against convention.

Prince William 'still aggrieved' by Oprah interview says expert

She expressed her shock at being told he would not get security and the idea of him “not being safe”, and said she wanted him to have the title so he could have police protection.

But royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said it was understood the royal couple never wanted their son to have a title due to wishes to keep him out of the public eye.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “The issue of the title, I had always understood they didn’t want a title and wished for him to grow up normally.

“What is significant there, under the existing rules he has the title or Earl of Dumbarton if he wished to use it and secondly when Charles ascends the throne, he will get the HRH.

“But it is not necessarily clear if they would want this now.

“There have been reports that the Queen will be reaching out to Harry to find out further issues which will no doubt include discussions on the future.

“Healing is going to be an important part of this and how precisely it turns out and transpires, I don’t know. The issue with the title wasn’t linked to anything to do with race.

“It was under the current rules which date back to 1917. But if it is wished that they have one that is something that would be done.”
