Boris Johnson’s wife, 33, is expecting her second child in December. As part of Britain’s Baby Loss Awareness Week, she declared she has found “this pregnancy very different” to her first.

Addressing her more than 5,000 Instagram followers, Carrie took to the social media platform last summer to reveal she had suffered a miscarriage at the beginning of the year that left her “heartbroken”.

She wrote: “Hoping for our rainbow baby this Christmas.”

Rainbow babies are children born to a family who has lost another one before due to stillbirth, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, termination for medical reasons, or death during infancy.

She continued: “I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves.

“Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well.

“I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too.”

The announcement came just two months after her wedding to the prime minister. Carrie would have been around two months pregnant then.

The couple’s first child, Wilfred, born on April 30, 2020, will soon have a sibling whom to play with. The two kids will also have five stepsiblings – Mr Johnson’s offspring from previous relationships.

Pregnant Carrie highlighted the work of Tommy’s Baby Charity, an organisation that supports parents-to-be with information and research on pregnancy.

She wrote on Instagram this week: “The stories of other people’s experiences shared on their website provided me much comfort after our loss earlier this year.”

She added: “It’s also a helpful resource if you have friends or family that have experienced baby loss and you’re not sure what to say or how best to be supportive.

“I’ve found this pregnancy very different to my first.

“Pregnancy after loss is totally wonderful but the worry is constant.”

Empathising once again the charity’s work, she said: “Tommy’s has shown me that’s completely normal.”

While Carrie and Mr Johnson welcomed Wilfred to the world in the midst of the first lockdown of the coronavirus pandemic, it is hoped that their second baby will arrive in less restrictive conditions.
