The Duke and Duchess of Sussex told Oprah Winfrey in their interview, which aired last week, that they were told their son would not have the title of Prince. While Meghan said this would be breaking with “protocol”, Archie is actually not entitled to that rank at the moment as per Letters Patent, which determine who is given the title of Prince or Princess. In fact, Prince Andrew reportedly had to really push for his daughters Beatrice and Eugenie to have their titles, despite them being entitled to them.

Andrew reportedly wanted them to be fully recognised as Princesses “by blood” and lobbied for more high-profile roles for them within the family.

This was in direct opposition to the wishes of his older brother Prince Charles, who favoured a slimmed-down monarchy and is expected to “modernise the system”, cutting all but the most senior royals from public duties when he is King.

Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

Mr Myers noted that Andrew had pushed for Beatrice and Eugenie to be Princesses, but said he wasn’t sure whether it had really “served them well”.

He compared them to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, who has no royal titles, has enjoyed a very successful career, and is one of the most popular royals.

In a survey conducted by the Mirror last year, Zara was ranked the seventh most popular royal ‒ higher than high-profile members of the family like Charles and Camilla.

He said: “I know Andrew kicked up a stink many moons ago and wanted his children to be Prince or Princess and have all the trappings of royal life without doing very much for it.

“And I don’t know whether that’s really served Beatrice and Eugenie well because look at how Zara Tindall has got on with her life not having a title and seems arguably to have achieved a lot more and be a lot more popular with the public ‒ whether they care about that, I’m not sure.”

The notion that Andrew had to push for his daughters to be Princesses may be surprising to some, as his children are entitled to that rank according to Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917.

The Letters Patent limited the title of Prince or Princess to the children of the monarch, the children of the sons of the monarch and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, which is Prince George.

In 2012, the Queen issued another Letters Patent to include all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, which is why Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have their titles.

Because Charles is the Prince of Wales, there is no question as to William and Harry’s titles, yet Andrew reportedly had to push for his daughters to be given their birthright.

Prince Edward, meanwhile, decided not to have his children be HRH and instead they have courtesy titles in line with their father being an Earl: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Andrew did not stop advocating for Beatrice and Eugenie’s status in the family as they got older and has continually pushed for them to perform more duties.

Now Andrew has fallen from grace, however, the “promotion” he had hoped for his daughters in taking on more public duties will likely never happen.

The Duke of York stepped back from royal duties in 2019 after his disastrous BBC Newsnight interview about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

A source told the Daily Mail: “The promotion which Andrew had hoped for in terms of his daughters taking on more duties will now never happen.

“They will have to focus on the day job.”

Another source told Best Life: “There is a tremendous amount of jealousy between Andrew and Charles.

“Andrew has long felt that his daughters, granddaughters of the Queen, have never got their due.

“Now, with this turn of events, Charles has every reason when he is King to freeze them out even further.”

Beatrice and Eugenie had 24-hour security paid for until 2011, when they had to start fending for themselves.

This cost £500,000 each per year and was a source of much consternation within the Palace.

Andrew reportedly lobbied hard for their security to remain in place, arguing that their status as minor royals differed from that of their cousins due to their HRH titles.

While he was overruled, it is possible that Andrew’s demands have influenced how Meghan views royal titles and security, as she insisted there was a link in her Oprah interview, despite this not being strictly accurate.
