Prince Charles “admired” Prince Harry’s first public statement defending Meghan Markle, royal commentators have claimed. In 2016, while the couple were only dating, the Duke of Sussex made the “unprecedented move” to ask the British press to “lay off” the Duchess of Sussex. Royal commentators discussed the reaction to the statement on Channel 5 documentary, ‘Charles & Harry: Father and Son Divided’.
Viscountess Julie Montagu told viewers: “Statements started coming out saying, ‘You need to lay off my girlfriend, Meghan Markle.
“Saying that ‘these underlying racial tones’ need to stop.”
Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews explained: “I remember getting this email on my phone, and my jaw dropped actually.
“Harry’s anger was leaping off the page with his words and the tone.”

Royal author Tom Quinn added: “This was an unprecedented move really just instructing the press to back off and leave Meghan alone.
“Charles admired the fact that Harry was trying to protect Meghan.
“But I think he was very worried it would have unintended consequences, which, of course, it did.
“Handling the press is like handling gelignite, it’s almost impossible to do it safely.”
Prince Charles 'involved in Harry's army removal' says expert
Harry’s statement read: “Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.
“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.
“He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”

The statement was released while Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were on their Middle East tour.
It was criticised for taking attention away from the important royal event.
However, according to the documentary, the saga did not negatively impact Harry’s relationship with his father.
In fact, the Duke of Sussex asked the Prince of Wales to play a key role in his wedding to Meghan in 2018.
Charles agreed to walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle in St George’s Chapel.
