Prince Charles has long been in favour of being the head of a trimmed down monarchy and a royal expert has said Prince Philip also supported such a move. Gyles Brandreth, a friend of the late Duke, said Philip was well aware the Royal Family had grown enormously since he first joined the institution in 1947.
He told Express.co.uk: “One of the interesting things that Prince Philip pointed out to me that in the past the Royal Family has always been quite small.
“And when he became Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 it was just the King and the Queen and the two young Princesses.
“That was it really. That was the Royal Family.
“And now of course it became this larger thing altogether.
“But I think that going forward we are going to see, we are going to go back to a much slimmed down.”
The royal expert then said whom he thinks will come to the fore in this new version of the monarchy.
He said Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will take their place at the head of the Royal Family.
Princess Anne and Prince Edward will also take leading roles.
Mr Brandreth said: “We will have the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, and we will have Princess Anne.
“We will also have Prince Edward, who is going to become the new Duke of Edinburgh.
“Then we will have William and Catherine for the next generation.
“In a sense, it will be a leaner machine going forward and I think the Duke would have quite of liked that.
“Less to talk about, less to gossip about.”
It comes after reports Prince Charles will ensure his youngest son Prince Harry is shut out of the Firm.
A source told US Weekly: “Charles is working toward a new slimmed-down monarchy and is freezing Harry out.
“He’s actually already out.
“After the damage, Harry has caused the family, he firmly believes that his son doesn’t deserve the privilege of being a royal.”
Harry is no longer a senior member of the Royal Family, having stepped down alongside his wife Meghan Markle last March.
The couple recently appeared in a tell-all chat with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey, which saw the pair make a number of incendiary claims against the Royal Family.
