Royal commentator Daniela Elser highlighted how George, who turns eight today, has reached the same age William, Prince Harry and Prince Charles were when they were sent to boarding schools. Ms Elser said the birthday snap “hides a difficult decision” the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge face about their eldest son’s future.
Writing for news.com.au, Ms Elser said: “At first glance, today’s shot is par for the wholly predictable course: Personal, heartwarming and with a suitably bucolic twinge.
“But what makes this image so interesting isn’t what it shows but what it signifies, which is that George has reached the same age at which his father and uncle Prince Harry were bundled off to boarding school. (Ditto Prince Charles.)
“For the first time, the question has reared its controversial head over whether the Cambridges might decide to send their own son away to school now he’s reached this particular milestone moment.”
George currently attends Thomas’s Battersea along with his sister Princess Charlotte, six.
Prince Louis, three, attends the Willcocks Nursery School.
To mark George’s eighth birthday today, William and Kate released a sweet new snap.
The picture was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge, who is a keen amateur photographer, earlier this month in Norfolk, where the family have their Anmer Hall residence.
The future king looks casual in a striped polo shirt as he grins on the bonnet of a Land Rover Defender.
The car is a touching nod to George’s great-grandfather Prince Philip, who died in April and was known for his love of Land Rovers.
Members of the Royal Family posted birthday messages to George on social media.
The Queen’s official Twitter account said: “Wishing Prince George a very happy 8th birthday today!”

Prince Charles and Camilla added on their Clarence House Twitter account: “A very Happy Birthday to Prince George!”.
The Cambridges thanked royal fans for their birthday wishes for George.
They tweeted: “Thank you for all your lovely messages on Prince George’s eighth birthday!”
Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge was born in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, at 4.24pm on July 22 2013, weighing 8lb 6oz.
Proud new parents William and Kate showed him off to the world on the hospital’s steps one day later.
A great-grandchild to the Queen, he will be the 43rd monarch since William the Conqueror obtained the crown of England if, as expected, he follows the reigns of his grandfather the Prince of Wales and then his father William.
George delighted royal fans recently with his appearances during Euro 2020.
