Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have succeeded in getting “the privacy they wanted” for the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana. Rather than adhering to royal protocol, the couple announced the safe arrival of Lilibet in their own way and managed to evade the paparazzi whilst Meghan was at the hospital. Lilibet Diana was born on Friday, June 4.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the arrival of their second child through their website Archewell.

Royal expert Natalie Oliveri said: “Back when Archie was born in 2019, their announcement was really dictated by royal protocol and the Palace.

“It was Buckingham Palace who announced that Meghan had gone into labour and just a few hours later, Harry fronted the cameras in front of the horse stables at Windsor Castle.

“Now they’ve put up the announcement on their website Archewell, that lovely statement that we saw earlier. Before, we had to wait two days to find out Archie’s name and now we know Lilibet’s name straight away which is lovely.”

Whilst the couple have not yet released a picture of their baby daughter, it is widely expected that they will choose an intimate photo that will be taken in the privacy of the couple’s home.

This is a contrast to the photocall that is expected of Royal Family members and which Meghan and Harry did following the birth of their eldest child, Archie Harrison.

Natalie Oliveri added: “Meghan was able to go to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital near their home in Montecito, California, had the baby and was able to go home without any of the papparazzi finding out.

“They really got the privacy they wanted.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have frequently spoken about their difficult relationship with the media, particularly the British tabloid press.

During their time as senior royals, they said the press vilified Meghan Markle and ignored the couple’s right to privacy, often printing false stories with racial undertones.

Meghan and Harry announced they would be stepping away from the Royal Family in January 2020, in a shock move that was dubbed ‘Megxit’ by the press.

Since then, they have moved to California and have stressed their desire to have their privacy respected.

Meghan and Harry welcomed their baby daughter on Friday at 11:40am. A spokesperson for the couple said both mother and baby were “healthy and well, and settling in at home”.

In the statement on their website Archewell, the pair thanked the public for their well wishes and said their daughter was “more than we could have ever imagined”.

Lilibet Diana is named after both her great-grandmother the Queen and her grandmother Princess Diana.
