Prince Harry made special detour on way back from Coronation to honour Queen

Russell Myers on King Charles’s regret at the Coronation

The Duke of Sussex visited Buckingham Palace during his fleeting visit to the UK last weekend, but he didn’t see any of his royal family members, according to reports.

Following the historic event at Westminster Abbey, Harry made a quick detour to Buckingham Palace, where his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, lived.

He reportedly spent less than half an hour at the royal residence.

Harry then left the palace and headed straight for Heathrow Airport to board a flight back to his family who had remained in California.

The lack of contact with other members of the Firm made sense for practical reasons as the other royals were busy with the day’s ongoing proceedings.

Harry, who was only in the country for 36 hours, stayed at his former royal residence of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, the Telegraph reported.

On the momentous day, the Duke was escorted in a black BMW to Westminster Abbey, protected by a specialist Scotland Yard squad.

His appearance alongside the rest of the Royal Family is the first since he published his bombshell memoir, Spare, in January.

He sat in the third row alongside his cousins, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, and his disgraced uncle, Prince Andrew.

He sat two rows behind his brother Prince William, who was seated in the first row alongside his wife and children.

Harry was missing from the official photos of King Charles’ Coronation, which were taken at Buckingham Palace following the elaborate ceremony.

The four photographs were released shortly after the new King released a statement thanking the nation for their support and pledging to rededicate his life to service.

In the group shot, which features working members of the Firm, they can be seen beaming as they pose in their finery.

Charles and Camilla are positioned in the centre of the shot, while Princess Anne stands beside the King, followed by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

They are joined by the Duke of Kent, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Gloucester.

On the other side, next to Camilla are Prince William and Kate, followed by Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Alexandra, and Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Harry’s car was spotted at Heathrow Airport just hours after the King’s Coronation ceremony wrapped up.

The royal rushed to get back to California in time to celebrate his son Archie’s fourth birthday which fell on the same day.

He told Jack Brooksbank he would be ‘heading off’ as they took their seats inside Westminster Abbey, before saying the words ‘airport’ and ‘3.45pm’, a professional lip reader told Hello.

Harry’s car was then spotted leaving London, after his fleeting visit to Buckingham Palace, and heading towards the airport.
