Meghan Markle discussed her father for the first time in public during last weekend’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. The Duchess and Thomas Markle were once close but allegedly have not spoken for years. Now a new Channel 5 royal documentary has explored the role that Prince Harry played in the growing rift between his wife and father-in-law, with correspondent Simon Vigar insisting more could have been done to build bridges.

Mr Vigar told the programme ‘Harry and Meghan vs the Monarchy’ that: “This is one of the great what-ifs of the whole saga.

“Why didn’t Harry go to Mexico to meet him.

“Why didn’t Meghan take him, why didn’t Harry insist before it all blew up.

“I mean the whole thing was so avoidable and I do think that Harry has to take some responsibility for that.”

Royal expert Jenny Bond added: “Thomas was simply not part of these early meetings.

“She seemed as she got closer and closer to Harry and the royal life, less and less inclined to rekindle the relationship with the Markle side of her family.”

The father and daughter remain unreconciled to this day with Mr Markle claiming he has not even met his son-in-law or his grandson Archie.

He also told Good Morning Britain this week that he has not spoken to his daughter for four years.

Mr Markle said: “This is actually the first time I’ve heard her speak in four years.

“The last time we spoke, we actually didn’t speak we texted each other, I was laying in a hospital bed after having a heart attack.

“I had to tell them that I couldn’t come to the wedding.

“At that point, we pretty much said goodbye.”

Addressing his relationship with Meghan, Mr Markle added: “She can be angry with me, I can tell how angry she is, but I’m still her dad.”

It comes as Oprah shocked royal fans by suggesting the pair’s relationship may still be resolved.

Speaking after her groundbreaking interview with the royal couple, Oprah claimed: “From what I gathered, her relationship with her father is similar to what’s happening with Prince Harry and Prince William.

“That there’s a distance there and maybe with time things will get better, but for now, no.”
