When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in January 2020, the monarchy dwindled. Alongside their royal exit, Prince Andrew retired from public life due to his relationship with convicted peadophile Jeffrey Epstein. More recently, Prince Philip died in April and the Queen’s health has meant that she has been unable to undertake some official duties over the past few weeks.

This has meant that other senior members have had to step up and represent the Crown in the public sphere.

Royal experts discussed the impact Harry and Meghan’s exit had on the My5 documentary titled 2021: The Queen’s Terrible Year.

Andrew Neil said: When I first saw reports that the relationship was breaking down I didn’t quite believe them.

“The two boys have been pretty close for most of their lives and they’ve been through hardship together with the death of their mother.

“Harry’s decided to cut loose from the Royal Family, leaving a lot more pressure on William and Kate to continue with royal duties, particularly as Prince Philip at that time was seriously unwell, and the queen had stepped back.

“So it meant the royal duties are now being shared between fewer and fewer people. And I think William did resent that.”

Emily Nash added: “The Queen made it clear in her statement in response to the Oprah interview that Harry and Meghan remain much-loved members of the family.

“It’s clear that the falling out between the brothers, in particular, will be very hard for her to bear.

“Particularly given that she took a close interest in their upbringing following the loss of their mother.

“You know, these are two brothers who have been inseparable for many years. And it’s incredibly sad to see things and the way they have”

Prince William and Catherine have recently been praised for “stepping up” in their roles during this tumultuous time for the British monarchy.

The foursome have become a new fan favourite with the public, with them even being dubbed the new “Fab Four.”

The original Fab Four was made up of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
