Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the Princess Royal, 70, takes after the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, with her sense of duty. Philip, who is currently in hospital, retired in 2017 at the age of 96 after decades supporting the Queen and thousands of solo engagements.

Asked if Anne takes after her father with her sense of duty, Mr Fitzwilliams told “Oh yes.

“I think the two have always been very close and remain close.

“She is outspoken sometimes, she is practical, she is committed, she does a tremendous amount of good.

“And people if they want to look into what she does admire her.

“It’s so important that people see members of the Royal Family who are hard workers, who are committed and dedicated to the institution.

“And that they do their job, they prefer a low profile and they get on with it.

“In that sense we know that Anne and Prince Philip get on extremely well.

“Also what he achieved was absolutely astounding although of course so much publicity given to his so-called gaffes.”

On whether Anne will continue royal duties for many years like Philip, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “I’m sure that’s what she intends to do.

“The way she goes about her business has total public support and the reason she does it is her personal commitment to the monarchy and the Queen.

“There’s no doubt whatsoever she has a strong sense of duty and she inherited that from her father.”

The royal expert added that Anne’s popularity with the public is due to her being a “very hard worker”.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “She’s usually top of the number of royal engagements, not every year but most years.

“What she wants is the concentration on her work and that is precisely what she gets and I think she’s very pleased with that.

“What she would find very frustrating is of course the fact that she can’t currently carry out her duties for obvious reasons.

“There’s no doubt she’s tremendously popular.

“People admire someone who does so much good and who works as hard as she does.”
