Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, who turned seven last Friday, led the traditional unveiling of the Christmas tree and distribution of presents at the Monaco Palace. The adorable royal children wrapped up in warm clothes and face coverings as they handed sweets and gifts to their peers.

And they were the highest-ranking members of the principality at the event taking place on December 15 as neither the head of the Grimaldi family, Albert, or his wife Charlene were in attendance as she continues to recover from an infection.

The young royals were accompanied by their aunt Princess Stephanie and cousins Louis Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb.

This isn’t the first time one of Prince Albert’s sisters has stepped in and taken part in an official event alongside the young prince and princess.

On December 3, Princess Caroline and her son Pierre Casiraghi accompanied Albert and his children at the inauguration of the Christmas village in Monaco.

Last year, Gabriella and Jacques were accompanied at the gift-giving event by both their parents.

During this engagement, Charlene famously unveiled a dramatic half-hawk hairstyle which sparked a lot of comments and, at times, criticism among royal watchers.

The princess responded to it in early 2021 during an interview with French magazine Point de Vue, saying: “Certainly, of all the members of royal families, I’m probably the one who has tried the most different hairstyles, and I’ll continue. That’s my choice.

“The remarks of ‘But what is she doing?’ and ‘But it’s not royal!’ — I know these all too well.

“And I have nothing to say to them, except that we’re in 2021 and that in these times which are so troubling, so difficult, there are other, much more important subjects which deserve our attention.”

Princess Charlene was last seen in public in early November, when she returned to Monaco from her forced six-month stay in South Africa.

She marked her arrival in the principality by sharing a picture on her Instagram account showing herself leaning on Albert and hugging their children.

The caption read: “Happy day today. Thank you all for keeping me strong!!”

Charlene had travelled to South Africa in May to carry out conservation work with her foundation.

While she was meant to remain in the country where she grew up for less than a fortnight, a severe ENT infection barred her from flying.

During the six months she spent in South Africa, Charlene had to undergo several procedures to heal, with the last surgery taking place on October 8.

During her time in the country, she often spoke about missing her husband and children and said to be in touch with them via video calls.

Jacques, Gabriella and Albert also paid two visits to Charlene over the summer, in a bid to relieve her homesickness.

Her return to Monaco in November appeared to mark the end of Charlene’s health concerns.

However, her husband Albert revealed later during the same month Charlene had chosen to be admitted to a treatment facility “outside of Monaco” after she became “overwhelmed and couldn’t face official duties, life in general or even family life.”

Albert also told People magazine “several factors, which are private matters” were the results of Charlene’s current state.

As she is recovering in a facility, Charlene missed a few key appointments for the principality and her family.

On November 19, she did not mark in person Monaco’s National Day, but her adorable children showed they were thinking about her as they held handmade signs from their palace’s balcony saying they loved and missed her.

Last week, she marked Gabriella and Jacques’ birthdays by sharing a series of pictures showing the children in a room filled with decorations and balloons and a 7-shaped cake.

She wrote: “Happy birthday my babies. Thank you God for blessing me with such wonderful children. I’m truly blessed. Love mom”.
