Princess Diana was at the centre of one of the most controversial interviews in the Royal Family’s history. During the 1995 BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, Diana addressed a series of problems in her marriage to Prince Charles, including rumours he had an affair.

The interview sent shockwaves through the Firm – and Margaret, the Countess of Snowdon, decided she “wouldn’t have anything to do” with Diana.

Speaking on Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, Even Craig Brown, the author of Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, claimed the Countess’ fury went even further than thought.

He said: “She wouldn’t even have magazines with Diana’s face on the cover nearby. She would turn them over.”

The royal expert added that “if Diana had lived for another 30 years, she wouldn’t have spoken to her.”

Another royal expert likened Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent interview with Oprah Winfrey to Diana’s landmark Panorama special, claiming the late Princess would be enjoying the controversy following her son’s programme.

The highly anticipated CBS special with the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex aired on ITV at 9pm on Monday March 8.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain’s then-presenter Piers Morgan, royal biographer Andrew Morton was asked whether Diana would be enjoying the media attention Harry’s interview received.

Mr Morton replied: “I think the irony is she would be enjoying it.

“It is almost like Diana is getting her revenge from beyond the grave.

“Remember that she was the trailblazer in this, she put the boot into Prince Charles 20 odd years ago.”

The expert even suggested Diana’s initial interview plans included Ms Winfrey – instead of Mr Bashir.

He said: “Remember she was actually thinking of moving to Malibu.

“Also, Oprah was going to interview her and then Martin Bashir swooped in.”
