According to royal experts, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, nearly died when her daughter was born a month early. In 2003, the Countess had a sudden placental abruption, where the placenta prematurely separates from the uterus.

She had to have an emergency caesarean and her daughter Lady Louise Windsor was born November 8, 2003.

According to royal author Ingrid Seward, the Queen and Sophie’s bond became strong during this traumatic birth experience.

She told the Times: “[Sophie] nearly died. The Queen went to see her in hospital, which was unheard of.

“She rather took Sophie under her wing, maybe from that moment on.”

Sophie has become a rising royal in the family with the Queen “pushing” her gently to do interviews to show the best of the Firm.

Ms Seward explained: “I think the Queen’s pushing her. I don’t think she’s pushing herself because she just isn’t that pushy.

“All these interviews — I think it was the Queen saying, ‘Oh, get out and do it. We need someone like you, Sophie. Take the vacant ground.’”

After Prince Philip’s death in April, Sophie was said to be a “tremendous source of comfort” to the Queen.

Her Majesty’s youngest child Prince Edward and his wife Sophie visited the Queen at Windsor Castle soon after the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.

A tearful Sophie told reporters “the Queen has been amazing” as she and Edward drove away from the royal residence.

At the time, a royal insider highlighted how the Countess has a special bond with the Queen.

According to the Mirror, the source said: The Countess has been a tremendous source of comfort to the Queen.

“The Queen is very practical in making sure everyone is okay and despite her tremendous grief at the passing she is no different.

“Sophie cherishes her relationship with the Queen and not only appreciates her guidance and wisdom throughout her own life, she is very protective of her.

“Their bond is very like a mother and daughter and the feeling of love and respect is quite mutual. It is very special.”
