Princess Margaret died in 2002, a year which also saw the tragic death of the Queen Mother. Although the Queen was known to be heartbroken by her sister’s death, she is famously stoic when it comes to showing her emotions in public. But on several occasions in recent years, the Queen has paid touching tributes to her late sister.

Princess Margaret’s death

The Queen’s press secretary issued a statement on February 9, 2002, announcing that the monarch’s beloved sister had died that morning.

The statement read: “The Queen, with great sadness, has asked for the following announcement to be made immediately.

“Her beloved sister, Princess Margaret, died peacefully in her sleep this morning at 6.30am, in The King Edward VII Hospital. Her children, Lord Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto, were at her side.

“Princess Margaret suffered a further stroke yesterday afternoon. She developed cardiac problems during the night and was taken from Kensington Palace to The King Edward VII Hospital at 2.30am.

“Lord Linley and Lady Sarah were with her, and The Queen was kept fully informed throughout the night.

“Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and other members of the Royal Family are being informed.”

The Queen’s heartbreak at losing Margaret was evident at her funeral a few days later, when she was seen crying while standing with Margaret’s two children outside St George’s Chapel.

Memorial service, 2012

To mark the tenth anniversary of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother’s death in 2012, a memorial service was held in their memory.

The Queen led a group of royals at the service which included Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and Princess Anne.

Margaret’s two children, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto, were also in attendance at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Queen’s 94th birthday, 2020

To mark her 94th birthday on April 21, 2020, the Royal Family social channels shared a family video of the Queen and Princess Margaret as children.

In the footage from the Royal Collection Trust, then-Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret could be seen laughing, playing and dancing together.

With the pair the only children of King George VI and the Queen Mother, Margaret and Elizabeth were known to be incredibly close growing up.

And the decision to release the video for the Queen’s 94th birthday can be seen as a touching tribute to the Queen’s late sister.
