The Queen’s mother may have seen Princess Diana as “another Mrs Simpson”, a royal historian has claimed. Just as the infamous Wallis Simpson threatened the stability of the Royal Family with her scandalous relationship with former British king Edward VIII, the Princess of Wales was also feared to have the power to “pull the monarchy down”. Channel 5’s ‘When the Spencers Met the Monarchy’ explored the “wary” relations between the two women.

According to the documentary, the Queen Mother’s traditional Windsor values “never waivered”.

Historian Piers Brendon explained: “Charles’ greatest support in life was the Queen Mother.

“She was a very devoted granny.

“I think the Queen Mother probably saw Diana as another Mrs Simpson.”

He continued: “Somebody who might conceivably pull the monarchy down.”

Former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond said: “I remember Diana told me that she found the Queen Mother intimidating.

“She was rather wary of her.

“The Queen Mother probably would have felt that Diana should just put up with it and get on with it.”

She added: “That would have been her attitude.”

The documentary also spoke about how the Queen Mother counted Diana’s grandmother as a “close friend and confidant”.

She was also viewed as a “useful Windsor ally in the Spencer camp”.

Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter told Channel 5: “Lady Ruth Fermoy was Diana’s maternal grandmother.

“She’d served as a lady-in-waiting for the Queen Mother.

“She was very much of the same era in terms of her thinking divorce was not an option.”

Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Emily Andrews said: “She knows that Diana is unhappy in the marriage with Charles, and desperately unhappy.

“But she effectively tells her to get a grip, suck it up and stop crying. She sides with the Windsors over her own granddaughter.”
