Reason why Zara Tindall avoids Royal Box at Wimbledon but brother Peter doesn’t

Highlights from day nine at Wimbledon

The royals are regulars at Wimbledon every year, and the action from Day 10 of the tennis tournament attracted many family members, including the Queen Consort.

Zara Tindall and her older brother Peter Phillips were also in SW19 for a day of sport with their respective partners, as Zara was joined by husband Mike and Peter sat in the Royal Box with his girlfriend of two years Lindsay Steven.

However Zara and Mike did not take in the action from the Royal Box, and it seems there was a pretty good reason why they opted to sit elsewhere.

Princess Anne’s daughter is a brand ambassador for Rolex, and so she and Mike sat in the seats designated for the luxury timepiece company’s invited guests, which are not far from the Royal Box.

Dressed in a striped outfit from ME+EM and summery espadrilles, sports enthusiast Zara and Mike still seemed to enjoy the tennis from their side of the court.

Dickie Arbiter, royal expert and former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II, revealed the decision making process behind invitations to the Royal Box.

He told Hello! magazine how it works: “It’s up to Wimbledon. The Wimbledon organisation makes so many tickets available to Buckingham Palace.

“Some of them are in the Royal Box, some of them are in prime seats within Centre Court and those are distributed on a ballot basis.”

He added: “As far as filling up the Royal Box, well, it’s really up to Wimbledon who they invite. They will be informed in advance if a royal wants to go or they’ll send out an open invitation.

“Certainly, the Princess of Wales will go, she will go to the Ladies Final, she will go to the Men’s Final on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

“She might well go on other days as well and her office will alert Wimbledon to the fact that she wants to go and when she will go, and Wimbledon will do the seating plan accordingly, leaving the sort of front row seats available.

“But Wimbledon likes to fill up the rest of the seats with celebrities and they don’t have any difficulty doing that.”

Whilst many of the royals are sporty, Zara and Mike in particular are enthusiasts, having both reached the top of their game in their respective sports career fields.

Mike was a member of the England Rugby team that won the World Cup back in 2003, while as an equestrian Zara won an Olympic silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

Peter has been dating his girlfriend Lindsay Steven for two years, having divorced his wife and the mother of his two daughters Autumn Kelly amicably in 2021.
