Michelle Obama revealed that the Queen rubbished claims of strict royal protocol during one of her visits to Her Majesty. In 2009, the former First Lady was criticised for approaching the Queen with a hug, but during their second meeting, the Queen put her at ease. President Joe Biden has recently been accused of breaking royal protocol over the weekend as he refused to take off his sunglasses during his visit with the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Royally Us host Molly Mulshine said: “We know from the Obamas, Michelle Obama said the Queen actually confided in her and said, ‘None of that protocol really matters, it doesn’t matter!’

“So I don’t think the Queen cares that he had his sunglasses on, plus she’s met him in 1982 and he probably had even bigger sunglasses on because it was the 80s!

“I think the weirder thing is no one really wears sunglasses in the UK so that probably rubbed people the wrong way, because it’s just not as common.”

President Biden was also criticised for revealing the details of his personal meeting with the Queen.

During a press call after the meeting, he told journalists that the Queen had asked about Russian President Putin and the Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Royal protocol frowns on revealing details of private conversations that are had with the Queen.

President Biden visited the Queen at Windsor Castle on Sunday, June 13 along with his wife, First Lady Jill Biden.

The visit coincided with the last day of the G7 summit in Cornwall, where world leaders including Joe Biden and Boris Johnson had gathered to discuss issues such as COVID-19 and the climate emergency.

At Windsor, he was greeted with a Guard of Honour before joining the Queen at the dais for the US national anthem.

Later, they were taken to Windsor Castle’s Oak Room for afternoon tea. The meeting was a success with the President extending his visit by 10 minutes in order to speak with the Queen.

He praised the Queen for her generosity and said: “I don’t think she’d be insulted but she reminded me of my mother. In terms of the look of her and just the generosity. She was very gracious.”

The Queen and President also came into contact on the Friday evening, as Her Majesty held an evening reception at the Eden Project for the G7 world leaders.

Senior members of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were out in full force at the G7 summit, as part of a ‘royal charm offensive’.

Prince Charles and Prince William met with leading CEOs to discuss climate change whilst Kate accompanied Jill Biden to a primary school to discuss childhood development.

The Queen has met with all 14 US Presidents during her 69-year reign. In 2019, she hosted Donald and Melania Trump at Buckingham Palace, and during President Obama’s tenure, they met privately on three occasions.

Following her meeting with Joe Biden, she went on to greet Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday for afternoon tea.
