A vigil organised in response to the disappearance of Sarah Everard has now been cancelled the event organisers have announced this morning. Initially, people had been asked to gather – socially distanced and wearing masks – in Clapham tonight, one of the last places Sarah was spotted. Reclaim These Streets is organised by “a group of women who wanted to channel the collective grief, outrage and sadness in the community.”

When first announcing the vigil the organisers said: “We believe that streets should be safe for women, regardless of what you wear, where you live or what time of day or night it is.

“We shouldn’t have to wear bright colours when we walk home and clutch our keys in our fists to feel safe.

“It’s wrong that the response to violence against women requires women to behave differently.

“In Clapham, police told women not to go out at night this week. Women are not the problem.”

Why has Reclaim These Streets been cancelled?

Reclaim These Streets has been cancelled as the organisers said Scotland Yard officers “would not engage” to make the event “legal” and “Covid-secure”

In their statement, Reclaim These Streets said they had worked to engage with police to ensure the vigil could go ahead safely.

But they said officers from Scotland Yard “would not engage with our suggestions to help ensure that a legal, Covid-secure vigil could take place”.

They added: “In light of the lack of constructive engagement from the Metropolitan Police, we do not feel that we can in good faith allow tonight’s event to go ahead”.

Organisers from Reclaim These Streets said: “Update: We are sorry to confirm that our Clapham vigil scheduled for tonight is cancelled.”

They added: “Instead, we are fundraising £320,000 for women’s causes: £10K for every proposed fine for the 32 vigils originally scheduled.”
