Prince Harry, 36, announced he would be stepping down as a senior member of the Royal Family with his wife, Meghan Markle, in January. The Queen immediately called a meeting at the Sandringham estate which Charles, Harry and William attended but according to Mr Lacey – William “has a temper”. In his book Battle of Brothers, Mr Lacey detailed the fury felt by the royals.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Lacey claimed: “There was a moment of family fury because of the way Harry had lost his temper and had released prematurely his plans for moving abroad with Meghan.

“But William, of course, also has a temper.

“When I started writing the book, people would say you know both brothers can fly off the handle and that’s what happened before the Sandringham summit.

“The Queen organised the so-called summit, invited the family to come beforehand to try and rub off the rough edges.

“William actually refused; he said he would only sit down with his brother at the negotiating table with his negotiating team.

“That’s something that has got to change in the future.”

Royal commentators Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie have discussed claims in the new book about why the Queen took away Meghan and Harry’s royal titles in a professional capacity.

Speaking on the Royally Obsessed podcast, Ms Bowie said: “Another revelation, William refused to eat lunch with Harry at the Sandringham summit which is when they had to hash at the details of the Sussexes’ exit.

“Harry and Meghan acted like ‘Hollywood lawyers demanding guarantees on every single point as if it were a contractual negotiation’.

“Understandable since Meghan’s background is Hollywood so I figure that would make sense.

“As an American, we’re more contractual.”

Reading a claim in Mr Lacey’s book, she added: “‘Queen Elizabeth II has always had a soft spot for Harry and had been delighted with Meghan but took away the Sussexes’ royal branding because she felt they became erratic and compulsive’.”

Responding to the claims, Ms Firito said: “That one stood out to me while I was reading through the revelations.

“I thought that was interesting because it was a sort of twist at the end.

“The details were carved out but it came a little bit after the initial split.”

Since then, Harry and Meghan have paid back the £2.4million of taxpayers’ money used to renovate Frogmore Cottage.

The pair are both now living in the US with their son, Archie.
