Royals attend to their public duties and engagements across the UK. While out on royal business, members of the Royal Family have plenty of properties to choose from when picking somewhere to stay. The Queen has six different residences which she stays in over the course of the year or while performing royal duties across the UK.
How many castles does the Queen have?
The full list of the Queen’s residences are:

- Balmoral Castle
Buckingham Palace is considered the official working residence of the Queen and it is situated in London.
Windsor Castle is the Queen’s country home in Windsor, Berkshire, and she is known to spend a lot of time there.
Sandringham and Balmoral are both privately-owned estates, meaning they are the private property of the Royal Family.
Sandringham in Norfolk is best known as the Queen’s main residence during the Christmas period.
Members of the Royal Family have visited the Queen at Sandringham for many a festive season in the past.
Balmoral, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is the Queen’s summer holiday destination.
Members of the Queen’s family often visit the Queen at Balmoral at some point over the summer.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it is the Queen’s official Scottish residence.
Hillsborough Castle is the Queen’s official residence when she visits Northern Ireland.

Where do other royals live?
Along with the main residences of the Queen, there are several other residences across the UK owned or used by members of the Royal Family.
There are a number of crown properties used by royals in the capital and in Windsor.
St James’s Palace in London is home to Princess Anne and the Queen’s cousin, Princess Alexandra.
Kensington Palace is the London residence of the Cambridge family, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
Clarence House is the official London residence of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
Frogmore Cottage in Windsor is leased from the Crown Estate to Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
The Royal Lodge in Windsor is the home of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
Bagshot Park in Surrey is the official residence of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
There are also several privately-owned royal residences across the country, including Anmer Hall in Norfolk, the country residence of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.
Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire is the private residence of Princess Anne.
Birkhall in Balmoral and Highgrove House in Gloucestershire are the private residences of Prince Charles.
